What makes me qualified to review resumes?
My desire to review resumes is accidental. Through the work I have done with YouTube and the network I've developed since witing Atomic Note-Taking, I've been in a position to help a few people.
Aidan Helfant, who kindly invited me onto his podcast with Episode 40 about becoming a critial thinker with the Zettelkasten, asked me to review his resume. I hopped on a screen recording and went to town. I gave him everything I could, and found out it was a lot of feedback.
I have this innate desite to help other people. If you have my attention, I'll give as much as I can. And, having been in a position where I've hired for many roles over the years, I always felt that some simple changes to a resume would make a big difference.
So I put this web site together to see what happens. It's your chance to get my attention to help you out. My time is valuable, so I'll only take on a few clients at a time. If it works, I'll focus on teaching my methods to other reviewers.
My journey
The year is 1993, and at 11 years old and I crack open a book on C programming. I'm hooked. I didn't even have a compiler to run the code. I would write the code by hand with a pencil and paper. By age 18 I started my own technology company—which I still run today—building websites and apps.
I graduated from university with a First in BSc in Computing specialisting in Internet Technologies. In 2003 I co-founded MattressOnline where I'm currently the Chief Innovation Officer.
However while side hustling on MattressOnline, I joined IBM as a Software Engineer in 2004 where I learned everything enterprise. Then I moved to Ericsson where I became their UI and UX expert in a fast paced, cutting edge environment (there was something about that job that made me love it—I think I really grew up in that job).
I've been a part-time CTO for Jisp working with remote off-shore development teams. I've contracted for Zamzar enhancing their web app. I've freelanced as a UX designer for companies in the biotechnology and real-time ad network industries.
Today when I'm not innovating in the mattress industry, I'm developing my own apps and projects because, quite simply, I love it, and it extremly valuable to others.
Hiring Experience
Throughout my career, I've been directly involved in hiring and building teams across various disciplines in the digial space. So that's software developers, graphic designers, UX designers, data analysts, DevOps, marketing managers, digital leadership, etc.
Being an entrepreneur, combined with my experience as an experience designer and passion for neuromarketing, I'm in this unique position to understand what employers look for in candidates and how to sell yourself as a candidate.
So yeah, I've reviewed hundreds of resumes and conducted countless interviews, from entry-level positions to senior roles. This experience has shown me exactly what makes a resume stand out—and what common mistakes can instantly make your resume fail.
Recognition & Impact
My work has been recognised with the E-Commerce Business Award at the 2022 Scale-Up Awards. I've had the privilege of sharing my knowledge through various channels, including giving seminars at Queen Mary University of London and mentoring PhD students and established professionals.
I'm also the author of Atomic Note-Taking and am currently building Flowtelic—a next-generation note-taking app. These projects are part of my overall calling to help inspire a generation of thinkers and doers. And it all starts with helping teach people to get the job that starts the investment in their career captial, so that they can go on to do great things with impact.
